mumble, mumble
as of the 10-day march countdown, i had planned on hyphenating my last name and dropping my maiden altogether.
then i got married, and that all changed. i have been stumbling all over the combination for days now. so, i started using my married name on the air and it got a teensy bit easier.
a typical conversation with one of our media partners goes like this: ‘hi, this is ruth (old name). is so-and-so in? i wanted to see if we could schedule an interview today….’ and when transferred, i would say ‘hi! this is ruth (ol—-new name) …’ i got laughed at a lot while i tried to say my name.
on the broadcast yesterday, i started it with my old name and ended with my new name. ‘i’m ruth (old name) with MNN….’ ‘for MNN, i’m ruth (new name).’ didn’t catch it until final production when i was listening for the last time before sending up to the website. oopsie. had to fix.
when i told BFG that i had decided to go on-air with my married name, he smiled real big…it didn’t bother him if i kept on using my old name, but he liked that i decided to change it anyway. the test came with boyo. he was in my office listening and noted my use of the married name…he corrected me.
i explained that it was an easier name to say on the air (and one less bi-dental plosive to edit out), but that i was keeping my hyphenated name for all other purposes. it’ll be on my business cards that way, and all business correspondance. he seemed satisfied with that…
so, with that said, i’m ruth b-b-k-k-…never mind. you know who i am.
